How to Uninstall Mozilla Extensions

Firefox (version 0.9 or greater)

Firefox version 0.9 or greator has a built in uninstaller.

  1. Click Tools > Extensions
  2. Click the extension you want to uninstall in the list
  3. Click Uninstall

Mozilla, Thunderbird and Firefox (version 0.8 or lower)

These applications currently don't have a way to automatically uninstall extensions. I have created an extension to do this for you. So you can either do it manually (see below) or download my uninstaller extension and use that.

Uninstalling Manually

For Mozilla and Thunderbird and Firefox (version 0.8 or lower)

Extension installed in the application directory (default)
  1. Exit your browser
  2. Find the chrome directory in your browser's application directory.
On a Windows that directory may be something like,
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\chrome\
  3. Delete chrome.rdf and the overlayinfo directory -- they will be regenerated at startup
  4. Delete [extensionname].jar and/or any [extensionname] directory
  5. Remove every line with reference to the extension name from installed-chrome.txt
  6. Start your browser
Extension installed in the profile directory

If you have installed the extension in your profile directory, it's a bit harder and you can NOT follow the instructions above.

  1. Exit your browser
  2. Find the chome directory in your browser's profile directory.
On a PC with Firefox that directory may be something like,
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jeremy\Application Data\Phoenix\Profiles\default\sk6kqj2s.slt\chrome\
  3. Delete [extensionname].jar and/or any [extensionname] directory
  4. Start your browser

This method for removing the extention from the profile directory may not always work. If you want to be thorough either create a new profile, or if your familiar with XML, remove each reference to the extension from any RDF file located in the overlayinfo directory.
